Information on Thyroid Cancer

There are about 20,000 new cases of thyroid cancer each year in the United States.
Females are more likely to have thyroid cancer at a ratio of three to one. Thyroid cancer can occur in any age group, although it is most common after age 30 and its aggressiveness increases significantly in older patients.
The majority of patients present with a nodule on their thyroid which typically does not cause symptoms. Remember, over 99% of thyroid nodules are not cancer! But, when a thyroid cancer does begin to grow within a thyroid gland, it almost always does so within a discrete nodule within the thyroid.

Symptoms of thyroid cancer: Occasionally, symptoms such as hoarseness, neck pain, and enlarged lymph nodes do occur in people with thyroid cancer.. Although as much as 75 % of the population will have thyroid nodules, the vast majority are benign. That’s right, most of us have nodule in our thyroid glands! Young people usually don’t have thyroid nodules, but as we get older, more and more of us will develop a nodule. By the time we are 80, 90% of us will have at least one nodule. Far less than 1% of all thyroid nodules are malignant A nodule which is cold on scan is more likely to be malignant, nevertheless, the majority of these are benign as well Thyroid Cancer Type and Incidence Papillary and/or mixed papillary/follicular ~ 78%

Thyroid Cancer Treatment : Usually diagnosed by sticking a needle into a thyroid nodule or removal of a worrisome thyroid nodule by a surgeon.
The removed thyroid nodule is looked at under a microscope by a pathologist who will then decide if the nodule is benign (95 – 99% of all nodules that are biopsied) or malignant (way less than 1% of all nodules, and about 1 – 5 % of nodules that are biopsied).
The pathologist decides which type of thyroid cancer it is: papillary, follicular, mixed papilofollicuar, medullary, or anaplastic.
The entire thyroid is removed by a competent surgeon (sometimes this is done during the same operation where the biopsy takes place). He/she will assess the lymph nodes in the neck to see if they need to be removed also.
In the case of anaplastic thyroid cancer, a decision will be made regarding the possibility of a tracheotomy. About 4-6 weeks after the thyroid has been removed, the patient will undergo radioactive iodine treatment. This is very simple and consists of taking a single pill. The pill will contain the radioactive iodine in the dose that has been calculated for that individual.
The patient goes home, avoids contact with other people for a couple of days (so they are not exposed to the radioactive materials), and that’s it.
A week or two after the radioactive iodine treatment the patient is started on a thyroid hormone pill. You can’t live without thyroid hormone and since you don’t have a thyroid anymore, the patient will take one pill per day for the rest of their life.
This is very simple and a very common medication (example of drug names are: Synthroid, Levoxyl, Armour Thyroid, etc).
Every 6 – 12 months the patient returns to his endocrinologist for blood tests to determine if the dose of daily thyroid hormone is correct and to make sure that the thyroid tumor is not coming back. The frequency of these follow up tests and which tests to get will vary greatly from patient to patient. Endocrinologists are typically quite good at this and will typically be the type of doctor that follows this patient long-term.

FOUR FRIENDS AND THE HUNTER

Long, long ago, there lived three friends in a jungle.
They were-a deer, a crow and a mouse. They used to share their meals together.
One day, a turtle came to them and said, "I also want to join your company and become your friend. I'm all alone. "You're most welcome," said the crow. "But what about your personal safety. There are many hunters around. They visit this jungle regularly. Suppose, a hunter comes, how will you save yourself?" "That is the reason why I want to join your group," said the turtle.
No sooner had they talked about it than a hunter appeared on the scene. Seeing the hunter, the deer darted away; the crow flew in the sky and the mouse ran into a hole. The turtle tried to crawl away fast, but he was caught by the hunter. The hunter tied him up in the net.
He was sad to lose the deer. But he thought, it was better to feast on the turtle rather than to go hungry. The turtle's three friends became much worried to see his friend trapped by the hunter. They sat together to think of some plan to free his friend from the hunter's snare.
The crow then flew high up in the sky and spotted the hunter walking along the river bank. As per the plan the deer ran ahead of the hunter unnoticed and lay on the hunter's path as if dead. The hunter saw the deer from a distance, lying on the ground. He was very happy to have found it again. "Now I'll have a good feast on it and sell its beautiful skin in the market," thought the hunter to himself. He put down the turtle on to the ground and ran to pick up the deer.
In the meantime, as planned, the rat gnawed through the net and freed the turtle. The turtle hurriedly crawled away into the river water. Unaware of the plot of these friends, the hunter went to fetch the dear for its tasty flesh and beautiful skin. But, what he saw with his mouth agape was that, when he reached near, the deer suddenly sprang up to its feet and darted away in the jungle. Before he could understand anything, the deer had disappeared.
Dejected, the hunter turned back to collect the turtle he had left behind on the ground in the snare. But he was shocked to see the snare lying nibbled at and the turtle missing. For a moment, the hunter thought that he was dreaming. But the damaged snare lying on the ground was proof enough to confirm that he was very much awake and he was compelled to believe that some miracle had taken place.
The hunter got frightened on account of these happenings and ran out of the jungle. The four friends once again started living happily.

CORRECT WAY OF COOKING NOODLES

The correct way to cook instant noodles without harming our bodies and health.
Normally, how we cook the instant noodles is to put the noodles into a pot with water, throw in the powder and let it cook for around 3 minutes and then it's ready to eat. This is the WRONG method of cooking the instant noodles. By doing this, when we actually boil the ingredients in the powder, normally with MSG (Ajinomoto), it will change the molecular structures of the MSG causing it to be toxic. The other thing that you may or may not realize is that, the noodles are coated with wax and it will take around 4 to 5 days for the body to excrete the wax after you have taken the noodles.

CORRECT METHOD :
1. boil the noodles in a pot with water.
2. once the noodles is cooked, take out the noodles, and throw away the water which contains wax.
3. boil another pot of water till boiling and put the noodles into the hot boiling water and then shut the fire.
4.. only at this stage when the fire is off, and while the water is very hot, put the ingredient with the powder into the water, to make noodle soup.
5. however, if you need dry noodles, take out the noodles and add the ingredient with the powder and toss it to get dry noodles.
Dietitian's Note: If you buy plain Hakka noodles you may initially need to boil it in water and discard the water. This will soften the noodles,but to prevent it from sticking we need to add a tbsp of oil,also the noodles are deep fried partially to make it crunchy and then dust it with flour to prevent it from sticking while boiling.
Hence when you buy the noodles they are already made unhealthy and this is the type we use to make stir fry noodles,and the regular Maggi too is made the same way plus they add MSG/ ajinomoto and other chemical preservatives.
A large number of patient with the ages ranging from 18-24 years are ending up with pancreatic either as a swelling or infection of the pancreas due to regular consumption of instant noodles.... If the frequency is more than 3 times a week, then it is very hazardous...

Fruits For Diabetic Patients..

person suffering from diabetes should abstain from eating foods that are rich in cholesterol and fats.

The food should be light, non-greasy and easy to digest with lots of fibre content. Most fruits fit correctly in this category, and are known for their various beneficial effects on a patient suffering from diabetes. They are low on fats and highly rich in nutrients and vitamins and have a positive effect on the unusual rise in the blood glucose levels...... However, one should avoid fruit juices and fruit concentrates, because they contain lot of sugar and many fruits are required to make one glass of juice.

Moreover, fruit juices do not provide a person with the dietary fibre. Choose whole fruits more often than juices. They have more fibre. Choose fruits and fruit juices without added sweeteners or syrups. Eat lots of citrus fruit such as oranges, sweet lime, grapefruit, or olives. You can choose from any of the fruits available in the market. Each one has some benefit or the other. Although diabetics can have any fruit, but they should preferably avoid mango, custard apple, grapes, chikoo, as they have a high sugar content.

There are three fruits in particular that are especially beneficial for diabetic patients - apple, grapefruit and Jamun (jamun). Apple : One the most popular fruit, apples have a high pectin content and are very beneficial to diabetic patients. Pectin is found in the rind and in the pulp, and acts as a detoxifier of the body by supplying an excessive amount of galacturonic acid. This helps remove harmful waste from the bloodstream and can lower a diabetic’s insulin requirements by up to or even more than 35%. Besides being rich in pectin, apples are also rich in vitamin B1. Vitamin B1 prevents the damage of the brain cells that can occur due to diabetic acidosis.

Grapefruit : Grapefruit – a citrus fruit with a typical, refreshing flavour has several medicinal properties that helps one fight diabetes – can bring down the blood glucose level within a time span of just three days. However, just a diet of grapefruit is not enough. One needs to take more of vegetables and fruits rather than a diet rich in fats. Nutritionists recommend that anyone suffering from high blood sugar levels should be consuming at least three servings of grapefruit every day. Grapefruit can also be used as a preventative measure against high blood sugar levels, especially when used in conjunction with a low fat, low-sugar, low-starch diet. Diabetic patients should experience a change in less than three months. Rose apple or Jamun : The elements present in jambul have a strong positive effect on pancreas. It prevents the conversion of starch into bad sugar, thus controlling the blood sugar levels. The seeds of this fruit can be dried, powdered and then taken with water. Apart from controlling diabetes, it also relieves thirst and prevents excessive urination. In addition to the fruit, the bark of the Jamun tree is also used to treat diabetes. The bark itself is dried out entirely, then burned into a white-colored ash which is then taken. In Ayurveda, a diabetic patient is given about two grams of this ash in the morning on an empty stomach and two grams each in the afternoon and in the evening - an hour after meals. The question is not whether or not you should eat fruit but rather how much and what kinds of fruit you should be eating. People with diabetes are encouraged to eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day. Spreading the fruit you eat through the day will avoid a sudden rise in blood glucose levels. Although some fruits have a lower glycemic index, the important thing is to increase the variety of different fruits that one eats. Eating more fruit and vegetables also helps to improve the overall balance of the diet.

Fruit is the perfect snack. However, one needs to be careful about the fruits chosen to eat, how often you eat them and when you eat them. It is advisable to choose fruits that rank low on the glycemic index. Fruits high on the index are mango, chikoo, custard apple, dates, pineapple. How fast a fruit will raise your blood sugar also depends on considerations as whether you eat the fruit after a high-calorie meal or drink it as a glass of fruit juice on an empty stomach.

It is also important to pay attention to the size of the fruit you eat - choose a small or medium-sized portion over a large one (or eat only half of the large one).
